In a hard-fought battle at Mullett Arena, the Miami RedHawks edged out the Arizona State Sun Devils with a 2-1 overtime victory on Friday night. The win marks Miami's first NCHC road victory in 1,049 days.
The game was a tightly contested affair from the start. After a scoreless first period dominated by special teams, Casper Nassen broke the deadlock late in the second period, putting Miami ahead with his sixth goal of the season.
Arizona State, however, responded late in the third period. With just 2:52 remaining in regulation, Sam Court scored his first goal of the season, tying the game and sending it into overtime.
The RedHawks didn't waste any time in the extra period. Just 1:08 into overtime, David Deputy fired a wrist shot past Arizona State goalie Connor Hasley to secure the win for Miami. Deputy's goal was his seventh of the season. Kocha Delic assisted on both Miami goals.
Miami's penalty kill was perfect, denying all five of Arizona State's power-play opportunities. However, the RedHawks were unable to capitalize on their own power plays, going 0-for-4. Arizona State outshot Miami 38-23 and controlled the faceoff circle, winning 63.6% of the draws. Logan Morrell was particularly dominant, winning 16 of 20 faceoffs.
Goaltender Matteo Drobac was a key factor in Miami's victory, stopping 36 of 37 shots. Hasley, in net for Arizona State, stopped 19 of 21 shots.
With the win, Miami improves to 12-7-2 overall and 3-6-2 in NCHC play, earning two valuable points. Arizona State falls to 11-11-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the conference, picking up one point in the loss. Before this game, Arizona State retained the Desert Hockey Classic championship for a third straight year. The Sun Devils split a road series in Ohio at the end of October. Miami's 11 wins are their highest win total since 2017-18.
The RedHawks will look to complete the series sweep against the Sun Devils.
