Shubman Gill addresses T20 World Cup omission, expresses hope for India's victory in the tournament.

Shubman Gill has finally addressed his exclusion from India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. While expressing his disappointment, the young batsman conveyed his support for the team.

"Of course, it's a dream for any player to represent their country at the World Cup," Gill stated in an interview. "I was also looking forward to it, but unfortunately, I didn't make the cut this time. But I have no regrets. I respect the decision of the selectors, and I'm sure they have made the best choices for the team's success. I will be cheering for Team India, and I hope that they win the World Cup."

Gill's exclusion from the squad sparked varied reactions. Some fans and experts expressed surprise, while others pointed to his recent form in T20Is as a possible reason. In 15 T20Is played in 2025, Gill managed to score 291 runs. He was also named vice-captain during the Asia Cup 2025. His last series against South Africa saw him score 4, 0, and 28, and he missed the final two matches due to injury and other reasons.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting admitted his surprise at Gill's exclusion, highlighting the depth of Indian cricket. "I couldn't believe that," Ponting said. "I mean, I know his recent form hasn't been great in white-ball cricket... If you can think that someone as good as Shubman Gill doesn't get picked in a World Cup squad, then it goes to show how many good players they do have".

According to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, team balance played a crucial role in Gill's omission. Agarkar clarified that the team opted for a combination featuring two wicketkeepers at the top of the order. He added that Gill remains highly rated and was unlucky to miss out. Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20 captain, echoed this sentiment, stating that the team wanted a wicket-keeper to bat at the top.

Despite missing out on the T20 World Cup, Gill's supporters believe he has a bright future ahead of him. Sanjay Manjrekar, another former Indian batter, said that including Gill in the T20 team was a mistake in the first place. He stated that Gill was included on the back of an outstanding Test series against England, where he scored 754 runs in five matches.

While some have questioned the selectors' decision, Gill has chosen to take it in stride. "It is what it is," he said. "I can only focus on what's in my control, which is to keep working hard and improving my game. I'm still young, and I have a lot to learn. I'm sure I'll get more opportunities to represent my country in the future." Gill's response reflects a mature approach to the setback, focusing on self-improvement and supporting the team's chances at the upcoming T20 World Cup.
