Alexandre Texier's Strong Performance Puts Pressure on the Canadiens, Forcing a Roster Decision.

Alexandre Texier is rapidly becoming a key figure for the Montreal Canadiens, showcasing a blend of skill and determination that is forcing the team's management to consider his long-term value. After a somewhat unceremonious exit from the St. Louis Blues, where he struggled to find his footing, Texier signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Canadiens in late November 2025. This move, initially seen as a low-risk gamble by General Manager Kent Hughes, is now yielding significant returns.

The 26-year-old forward is seizing the opportunity in Montreal, demonstrating his versatility and offensive capabilities. In 22 games with the Canadiens, Texier has tallied seven goals and seven assists. His recent performances have been particularly noteworthy, including a career-high three-point game against the Calgary Flames on January 7, 2026, and his first NHL hat trick against the Florida Panthers on January 8, 2026. These performances have not only boosted his confidence but also solidified his place on the top line alongside Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield.

"I appreciate the opportunity I've been given to be here," Texier said. "I am grateful and proud. I'm giving myself every opportunity to stay".

Texier's journey to Montreal was far from straightforward. After being drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second round (45th overall) of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, he showed promise early in his career. However, he faced challenges, including a lumbar stress fracture that limited his playing time. In St. Louis, he struggled to find consistency, leading to his contract termination.

The Canadiens' coach, Martin St. Louis, is familiar with Texier's capabilities, having observed his development during his time with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. St. Louis served as a special teams consultant with Columbus in 2019 when Texier played for their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. "He has all the tools to do what his brain is telling him to do," St. Louis said. "(Texier) has an opportunity right now to play with excellent players and I think he's taking advantage of it".

Texier's resurgence has also earned him a spot on France's men's hockey team for the upcoming Milano Cortina Olympics. As the lone NHL player on the roster, he is expected to play a significant role for his country.

Looking ahead, the Canadiens face a decision regarding Texier's future. As a restricted free agent in July, his performance this season is significantly bolstering his value. While some analysts suggest a short, realistic extension in the range of $1.5 to $1.75 million for two years, his continued success could drive that price higher. Kent Hughes and the Canadiens' management must weigh his recent contributions against his track record and potential fit within the team's long-term plans. While there is speculation that the Canadiens are interested in acquiring Calgary Flames forward Blake Coleman to add veteran presence, Alexandre Texier's emergence as a key player might influence the Canadiens' approach to any potential trades.
