FIFA World Cup Trophy Visits India After Over A Decade, Igniting Football Fever Across The Nation.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy has landed in India for the first time in nearly 12 years, igniting excitement among football fans across the nation. The trophy's arrival marks the beginning of a three-day tour as part of the official global trophy tour leading up to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The coveted trophy, made of 18-carat solid gold and weighing 6.175 kg, was unveiled in New Delhi on January 10. The design of the trophy, featuring two human figures holding the globe, dates back to 1974. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, and former Brazilian World Cup winner and FIFA legend, Gilberto D'Silva.

During the ceremony, Mandaviya emphasized the government's commitment to promoting sports, stating that it has become a national priority under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He expressed his belief that the trophy tour would inspire young people in India to engage more with football. He further added that the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour aligns with India's aspiration to be among the top five sporting nations by 2047. D'Silva echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the trophy would motivate Indian youngsters to play more football, similar to their passion for cricket.

The trophy's tour is organized by Coca-Cola, an official partner of the FIFA World Cup since 1978. As part of its global journey, the trophy will visit 30 FIFA member associations across 75 stops over 150 tour days, offering fans a unique opportunity to connect with the world's biggest football event. This initiative aims to expand the reach of the World Cup and engage with football-loving nations.

After spending two days in Delhi, the trophy will travel to Guwahati, Assam, before continuing its international tour. The last time the FIFA World Cup Trophy visited India was in 2013, when it was showcased in Kolkata. Prior to that, it was brought to the country in 2011, with stops in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Sanket Ray, President of Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, remarked on the growing sporting culture in India, supported by government initiatives that enhance access, facilities, and local engagement. He added that their partnership with FIFA enables them to bring landmark sporting moments closer to Indian consumers.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to kick off on June 11, and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The opening match will feature Mexico against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The 2026 World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams, divided into 12 groups of four.

The arrival of the FIFA World Cup Trophy in India after a 12-year gap has rekindled hope and excitement among football enthusiasts. Despite the challenges faced by the national team, currently ranked 142nd in the FIFA standings, and the suspension of the domestic league, the sport continues to capture the imagination of the country. The presence of the trophy serves as a reminder of the aspirations, belief, and enduring hope that India's football story will one day match its passion.
