Connor McDavid's current 20-game point streak is capturing the attention of the hockey world, sparking discussions about where it ranks in NHL history. As of January 14, 2026, McDavid extended his streak in the Edmonton Oilers' 4-3 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators, notching two assists.

McDavid's impressive run began on December 4th, when he recorded a hat trick and an assist in a 4-1 victory against the Seattle Kraken. Over the course of these 20 games, he has accumulated 19 goals and 27 assists, totaling 46 points. This scoring pace translates to a staggering 188-point pace over an 82-game season.

This achievement places McDavid in an exclusive group of NHL players. He is only the 23rd player in NHL history to record a point in 20 or more consecutive games within a single season. However, most of the players who have accomplished this feat played during the high-scoring era of the 1980s and early 1990s. Since the 1996-97 season, there have only been eight instances of a player achieving a point streak of 20 or more games. Before McDavid, Mitch Marner was the most recent player to reach this milestone with a 23-game streak in 2022-23.

McDavid's 20-game point streak also places him among the top active players. He is currently tied for the fourth-longest point streak among active players, behind Mitch Marner (23 games), Sidney Crosby (25 games), and Patrick Kane (26 games). While those streaks are impressive, McDavid's 2.3 points per game during his streak surpasses the per-game production of those players.

McDavid's performance during this streak has been exceptional, with 14 multi-point games. His 46 points in 20 games is a remarkable achievement in the modern NHL. The last player to exceed 45 points in a 20-game span within a single season was Mario Lemieux, who had 46 points (21 goals and 25 assists) from December 11, 1996, to January 26, 1997. Since 1991-92, only Lemieux and McDavid have reached 46 or more points in a 20-game stretch during a single season.

Within Oilers history, McDavid's 46 points in 20 games are the most by an Edmonton player in a single season since Wayne Gretzky recorded 46 points (6 goals and 40 assists) from February 14 to April 3, 1988. Besides McDavid and Gretzky, only Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, and Mark Messier have achieved at least 45 points over 20 games in a single season for the Oilers, all during the 1980s.

The longest point streak in NHL history belongs to Wayne Gretzky, who had a 51-game point streak. McDavid's current streak, while impressive, still has a ways to go to reach that mark.

Prior to this streak, McDavid's longest point streak in a single season was 17 games, which he had accomplished three times. His longest point streak spanning multiple seasons was 25 games, stretching from the end of the 2020-21 season to the beginning of 2021-22.

As McDavid continues his impressive run, he has the opportunity to climb higher in the NHL record books. The Oilers' upcoming schedule includes a home game against the Islanders, followed by a game in Vancouver, and then six home games against the Blues, Devils, Penguins, Capitals, Ducks, and Sharks.
