A bizarre turn of events unfolded during Monday night's game between the Florida Panthers and the San Jose Sharks, as goaltenders Sergei Bobrovsky and Alex Nedeljkovic engaged in a rare goalie fight. The incident occurred with 14 minutes remaining in a contest that had grown increasingly physical, marked by post-whistle altercations.
The catalyst for the goalie fight was a scrum in the corner of the Sharks' zone. Sharks defenseman Vincent Desharnais knocked down Panthers forward Mackie Samoskevich, prompting Florida's Evan Rodrigues to retaliate. Nedeljkovic joined the ensuing melee to defend his teammate. As the pushing and shoving appeared to subside, Bobrovsky took matters into his own hands, skating the length of the ice to challenge Nedeljkovic.
The two netminders exchanged blows for approximately 20 seconds before Nedeljkovic knocked Bobrovsky to the ice. Panthers fans at Amerant Bank Arena erupted in response to the spectacle. Both goalies received major penalties for fighting and minor penalties for leaving their crease. Despite Nedeljkovic being in his own end, both received the leaving the crease penalty.
While this marked Bobrovsky's first career fight, Nedeljkovic has previously dropped the gloves in a 2017 ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs game.
The Panthers have been Stanley Cup champions for the past two years. This season, Bobrovsky has started 33 games, with a record of 19-13-1, a 3.09 goals-against average, and an .87.50 save percentage. Nedeljkovic entered Monday's game with an 8-8-2 record, a 3.06 goals-against average, and a .891 save percentage in 22 games.
It remains to be seen whether Bobrovsky will face any disciplinary action from the league for his role in the fight. While no immediate injury was reported, any absence of Bobrovsky could be detrimental to the Panthers, who rely heavily on his performance.
