Mexican Forward Urged to Reconsider MLS Move: Is Playing with Messi a Career Setback?

Amidst Inter Miami's aggressive pursuit of Monterrey's star forward Germán Berterame, a cautionary voice has emerged, questioning the wisdom of the potential move. Former Mexico international Paul Aguilar has advised Berterame against joining Lionel Messi in MLS, suggesting it could be a "step backwards" in his career.

Inter Miami has reportedly made a $15 million offer for Berterame, a move that would be the second-largest signing in Inter Miami's history, should it be finalized. Monterrey's sporting president, José Antonio Noriega, has confirmed Inter Miami's approach, acknowledging the offer is attractive to all parties. A verbal agreement is reportedly in place, with the deal expected to be completed soon.

Aguilar, however, believes Berterame should remain with Monterrey to prepare for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and potentially secure a better offer after the tournament. He argues that Liga MX remains more competitive than MLS, providing a better platform for Berterame to showcase his talent and secure a spot in Javier Aguirre's World Cup squad. Aguilar stated, "For me, going to MLS is a step back, even though it is a league that has improved".

Berterame, who previously represented Argentina at the U17 level before switching his allegiance to Mexico, has remained tight-lipped about his future. When questioned by reporters, he declined to comment, stating, "They won't let me talk".

Despite Aguilar's reservations, Inter Miami is determined to strengthen its squad around Lionel Messi, with the CONCACAF Champions Cup identified as a major objective. The club has already made moves in the transfer market, including potentially replacing Jordi Alba with Sergio Reguilón.

The "Messi factor" has reportedly played a significant role in enticing Berterame, who had previously turned down lucrative offers from other MLS clubs. The opportunity to play alongside the Argentine star and gain international exposure is undoubtedly a compelling prospect.

However, some within Monterrey fear that Berterame's move to MLS could mirror the experience of Rodolfo Pizarro, who struggled after joining Inter Miami. The case of Brandon Vázquez, who had a disappointing season after moving to Austin FC, also serves as a cautionary tale about the level of competition in MLS.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Berterame, who must weigh the potential benefits of joining Messi in Miami against the risks of hindering his World Cup aspirations. Monterrey fans are bracing for the possible departure of their star striker, while Inter Miami hopes to add another key piece to its quest for silverware.
