In a stunning display of dominance, India's U-17 women's team defeated Bangladesh's U-19 team 4-0 to clinch the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship title at the Pokhara Rangasala Stadium in Pokhara, Nepal on Saturday, February 7, 2026. The "Young Tigresses" avenged their 0-2 defeat to Bangladesh in the earlier round-robin stage with a commanding performance in the final.
Despite being written off by some due to participating in a higher age-category tournament, the India U-17 team showcased remarkable composure and tactical discipline throughout the match. The team demonstrated maturity beyond their years, maintaining possession and dictating the tempo from the opening whistle. Their coordinated off-the-ball movement, swift passing sequences, and astute utilization of the wings consistently stretched Bangladesh, preventing them from establishing any significant rhythm. India's strategy centered on patient buildup, switching play through the flanks, and capitalizing on open spaces with rapid attacks.
Julan Nongmaithem, the team's captain, opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, setting the stage for India's triumph. Elizabed Lakra converted a penalty in the 63rd minute, further extending India's lead. Pearl Fernandes added another goal in the 68th minute, and Anwita Raghuraman, a substitute, sealed the victory with a goal in the 83rd minute.
Alva Devi Senjam and Pritika Barman played crucial roles in connecting the midfield and attack, while the defense maintained discipline, allowing Bangladesh little space to operate. India's persistent probing in the first half led to a beautifully executed goal in the 42nd minute. Alva's cross found Pritika unmarked near the far post, who then delivered a precise pass to Julan for the finish.
India had fielded their U-17 team in the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship to prepare the Young Tigresses for the AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup later in the year. This victory not only secures the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship title but also serves as valuable preparation for the upcoming AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup.
This win marks the 7th edition of the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship. India's U-19 team is currently in Sweden preparing for the 2026 AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup.
