The football world is in mourning following the passing of Billy Vigar, a 21-year-old former Arsenal academy player who died after sustaining a severe brain injury. Vigar, who was most recently playing for Chichester City, suffered the injury during a match against Wingate & Finchley on Saturday, September 20, 2025. The Isthmian Premier Division match was halted after just 13 minutes following the incident.
Reports indicate that Vigar collided with a concrete wall while attempting to prevent the ball from going out of play. He was immediately attended to by an ambulance team before being airlifted to the hospital. Upon arrival, he was placed in an induced coma due to the severity of the brain damage. On Tuesday, September 23, he underwent an operation to improve his chances of recovery. However, the injury proved too extensive, and he passed away on Thursday morning, September 25.
Chichester City FC announced Vigar's death through a statement released by his family. The statement conveyed the family's devastation and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and love shown for Billy within the sport. The club also requested privacy for the family during this difficult time and postponed their scheduled match against Lewes as a mark of respect.
Vigar's football journey began at the age of 14 when he joined Arsenal's academy. He progressed through the youth ranks, ultimately signing a professional contract with the club in July 2022. During his time with Arsenal, he played alongside several players who have since achieved prominence in professional football. He featured for Arsenal's U21 squad and also gained experience through loan spells at Eastbourne Borough and Derby County's U21 team. Described as a powerful and versatile forward, Vigar was known for his strong aerial ability and commitment to the team. Although a hamstring injury hampered his first season as a scholar, he bounced back, scoring four goals in 18 under-18 appearances. He also demonstrated his adaptability by filling in various positions, including defense.
After leaving Arsenal in 2024, Vigar joined Hastings United before moving to Chichester City.
Arsenal Football Club also released a statement expressing their sorrow at Vigar's passing. The club acknowledged his talent, love for the sport, and the pride he took in representing the team. They extended their deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Tributes have poured in from across the football community, with fans, coaches, and former teammates expressing their grief and remembering Vigar as a talented player and a kind person. Derby County, where Vigar had a loan spell, also shared their condolences. His passing has sent shockwaves through English football, highlighting the fragility of life and the risks athletes face.
