The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a flurry of moves to solidify their goaltending situation heading into the 2025-26 season. The team has signed veteran goaltender James Reimer to a professional tryout (PTO) and are reportedly working towards a contract extension with Anthony Stolarz.
The Maple Leafs announced on Friday, September 26, 2025, that they signed Reimer to a PTO. Reimer, 37, is a familiar face for Leafs fans, as he spent the first six years of his NHL career with Toronto after being drafted by the club in 2006. He made his NHL debut in 2010 and played over 200 games for the Maple Leafs, including their first playoff appearance in nearly a decade in 2013. Since leaving Toronto in 2016, Reimer has played for several teams, including the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, and Buffalo Sabres.
The decision to bring Reimer back comes as Joseph Woll has taken a leave of absence to attend to a personal family matter. General Manager Brad Treliving told reporters that there is no timeline for Woll's return. With Woll's absence, the Maple Leafs sought to add depth and insurance in goal. The PTO allows Reimer to compete for a roster spot, providing the team with a proven option. Other goalies in the Maple Leafs' system include Dennis Hildeby, Artur Akhtyamov, and Vyacheslav Peksa.
In addition to the Reimer PTO, the Maple Leafs are reportedly working on a contract extension with Anthony Stolarz. Stolarz, 31, is entering the final season of a two-year, $5 million contract with the Maple Leafs. According to NHL Insider David Pagnotta, the Maple Leafs and Stolarz are seemingly close to an extension. Stolarz had a career season in 2024-25, posting a 21-8-3 record with a 2.14 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. He also won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers in 2024.
Stolarz has expressed his desire for long-term security with the Maple Leafs. He told NHL.com that he would love to call Toronto home for more than a year or two. Darren Dreger reported that the Leafs would prefer a three-year agreement but may need to accept a four-year term at around $4.5 million AAV. General manager Brad Treliving has confirmed ongoing discussions with Stolarz's camp. Stolarz's current contract carries a cap hit of $2.5 million per season and expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, making him an Unrestricted Free Agent.
These moves indicate the Maple Leafs' commitment to solidifying their goaltending situation for the present and future. With Woll's absence, Reimer provides a veteran presence and experienced option, while a potential extension with Stolarz would secure a key piece of their roster.
