Senators blank Devils in preseason clash: A 2-0 shutout victory sets the tone for season.

The Ottawa Senators defeated the New Jersey Devils 2-0 in a preseason matchup held in Quebec City on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

The game remained scoreless until late in the third period when Stephen Halliday broke the deadlock for the Senators with just over four minutes remaining. Tim Stutzle provided a back pass to Halliday, who then beat Devils goalie Georgi Romanov. Olle Lycksell added an empty-net goal to seal the victory for Ottawa.

Despite the loss, Romanov had a strong performance in net for the Devils, stopping 30 of 31 shots. Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe praised Romanov's performance, saying, "He competed hard, he kept us in the game, made a ton of great saves," and that he "gave the guys hope throughout the game".

The Devils' lineup in the game featured a mix of NHL regulars and other players. Connor Brown, Dawson Mercer, Paul Cotter, Evgenii Dadonov, and Cody Glass were among the NHL regulars who played for New Jersey. Martin Brodeur, originally from Quebec, participated in the ceremonial puck drop.

Linus Ullmark made 14 saves in the Ottawa Senators' victory over the Devils. The Senators iced a roster close to a full roster. The Devils and Senators went toe to toe nearly all the way through the sixty minutes.
