Mohsin Naqvi's Stance on Asia Cup Trophy Handover and Alleged BCCI Apology Refusal Explained.

The aftermath of the Asia Cup 2025 final, where India defeated Pakistan, has been marred by a controversy surrounding the presentation of the trophy, with conflicting reports emerging about the conduct of Mohsin Naqvi, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Following India's victory on September 28, 2025, the Indian team reportedly refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan's Interior Minister. Reports suggest that the Indian team was unwilling to receive the trophy from a representative of a country with strained political relations with India. Some reports indicated that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that India could not accept the trophy from "a person who represents a country waging a war against us".

According to some reports, Naqvi initially denied the Indian team the opportunity to celebrate their victory with the trophy on the field. It was reported that he instructed ACC officials to remove the trophy and medals from the ground altogether after the Indian team refused to receive them directly from him. This led to a near-hour-long delay in the presentation ceremony, which ended abruptly without the Indian team receiving the trophy.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding whether Naqvi apologized to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the chaotic aftermath. Some sources indicate that Naqvi adopted a softer tone during the subsequent ACC meeting and expressed regret that the situation escalated. However, other reports state that Naqvi has denied apologizing to the BCCI.

Naqvi himself stated, "Let me make it absolutely clear: I have done nothing wrong and I have never apologised to the BCCI nor will I ever do so". He further added that he was ready to hand over the trophy and remained so, stating, "If they truly want it, they are welcome to come to the ACC office and collect it from me".

Following the controversy, the BCCI raised concerns during an ACC virtual meeting, asserting that the Asia Cup trophy belongs to the ACC and should be formally handed over to the winning Indian team. BCCI representatives insisted that the trophy was not the property of any individual.

Amid the controversy, reports emerged that Naqvi had handed over the Asia Cup trophy to the UAE Cricket Board. While it is confirmed that the trophy is with the UAE cricket board, it is unconfirmed how and when the trophy will be handed over to India.

The BCCI is reportedly considering lodging a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) if the trophy is not handed over to the Indian team within a defined time. Some sources even suggest that the BCCI is pushing for Naqvi's impeachment as ACC chief, citing breaches of conduct and protocol.

The events have drawn criticism, with some observers labeling Naqvi's actions as a mix of politics and sports, undermining the spirit of the game. Despite the absence of the trophy, the Indian team celebrated their victory.
