The Edmonton Oilers' goaltending plan has become clearer following the acquisition of Connor Ingram from the Utah Mammoth. The trade, executed by General Manager Stan Bowman, adds depth to the position, but the team's leadership insists that Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard remain the primary goaltending tandem.
Ingram as Insurance
Head Coach Kris Knoblauch emphasized that the Ingram acquisition serves as an "insurance policy" in case of injuries or underperformance from the existing duo. Bowman echoed this sentiment, stating that Ingram will initially be assigned to Bakersfield of the AHL to get him "up to speed". The Oilers can freely move Ingram between the NHL and AHL for a certain period, offering flexibility.
Confidence in Skinner and Pickard
Despite adding Ingram, the Oilers' management has expressed confidence in Skinner and Pickard. Knoblauch stressed that the team's plan remains unchanged, with Skinner and Pickard as the established NHL tandem. Skinner, who will be 27 in November, is the Oilers'primary netminder. Drafted by the Oilers in 2017, Skinner has steadily progressed, earning a three-year contract with a $2.6 million cap hit. However, he has also demonstrated his ability, setting a franchise record with an 11-game winning streak in the 2023-24 season. Entering training camp, Skinner has focused on improving his fitness, shedding weight to enhance his quickness and longevity.
Pickard is viewed as a reliable backup. The organization hopes that a new goalie coach, Peter Aubrey, can further elevate Skinner and Pickard's performance.
Contract Year Considerations
Interestingly, Skinner, Pickard, and Ingram are all in the final year of their respective contracts. This situation presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Oilers.
