Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has publicly declared his unwavering support for manager Ruben Amorim, stating that the team is "100% behind the gaffer". This declaration comes after United's 2-0 victory against Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday, a win that eased some of the pressure on the Portuguese head coach.
Mount, who opened the scoring in the eighth minute against Sunderland, emphasized the importance of the win, especially after a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Brentford. "We've had some results that hurt us – the team, the staff and the fans – but that was important today," Mount told BBC Sport. Benjamin Sesko secured the win with his second goal in as many games.
Amorim, who recently marked his 50th game in charge, has faced increasing scrutiny following an inconsistent start to the season, with the Red Devils sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League. The victory over Sunderland was only their third of the season and their first clean sheet. Despite the challenges, Mount believes the team is united and focused on fulfilling the manager's vision. "For us, it's just focusing on what the manager wants and that's in training. And then when it comes to the games, doing exactly what he asked for," Mount said. He added, "Everyone did their roles and responsibilities and it was a good performance".
Amorim acknowledged Mount's comments and expressed his desire to see the support manifested on the pitch. "I know they want to do the best, and I know they don't want to change the coach all the time," Amorim stated. He emphasized the need for action, saying, "We need to show with actions... I feel [the support] during the week, but we need to show it on the pitch".
The Manchester United manager tempered expectations, highlighting the team's inability to secure consecutive league victories during his tenure. "We know what happens when we win one game," Amorim said, adding, "The frustration is not to see the same team at home and away".
Despite the somewhat bleak outlook from the manager, the win against Sunderland provided a much-needed boost, with several players delivering strong performances. Senne Lammens, who was signed on deadline day, made his debut in goal and secured a clean sheet. Amorim praised Lammens's confidence and the team's overall performance, describing it as "an adult team". He also lauded Amad Diallo's impact.
Looking ahead, Manchester United face a tough challenge after the international break as they travel to Anfield to play Liverpool. Amorim is seeking his first back-to-back Premier League wins. Mount hopes the win against Sunderland will be a catalyst for a winning streak, aiming for consecutive wins and a push for the top four. "It starts today, and we'll be working hard over the break. We want to get back-to-back wins, then three in a row and push on for the top four," Mount affirmed.
