Brits, Mlaba inspire South Africa to commanding victory over New Zealand in Women’s World Cup
Indore, India – In a stunning turnaround, South Africa defeated New Zealand by six wickets in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Monday. After a humiliating defeat against England, where they were bowled out for just 69, the Proteas showcased their resilience with a remarkable all-round performance.
New Zealand opted to bat first, but Nonkululeko Mlaba's game-changing spell of 4/40 restricted them to 231. In response, Tazmin Brits' brilliant century (101 off 89 balls) and Sune Luus's unbeaten 83 powered South Africa to victory in 40.5 overs. This win marks South Africa's first victory in the 2025 ODI World Cup.
The White Ferns' innings began poorly, with Marizanne Kapp dismissing Suzie Bates for a golden duck. Georgia Plimmer and Amelia Kerr attempted to stabilize the innings, but Kerr fell for 23, caught by Luus off Nadine de Klerk's delivery. Plimmer also departed for 31, caught by De Klerk.
Sophie Devine, playing her 300th White Ferns appearance, provided some impetus with a composed 85 off 98 balls. She partnered with Brooke Halliday, but Mlaba broke their 86-run stand by dismissing Halliday for 45. Mlaba continued her dominance, claiming the wickets of Maddy Green and Devine, while also contributing to a run-out. Ayabonga Khaka and Laura Wolvaardt contributed to New Zealand's unravelling, as they lost their last seven wickets for only 44 runs.
Chasing 232, South Africa lost captain Laura Wolvaardt early, dismissed by Jess Kerr for 14. However, Tazmin Brits and Sune Luus forged a record-breaking 159-run partnership for the third wicket, the highest for South Africa in Women's World Cup history, steering their team towards victory. Brits, who was later named Player of the Match, dominated the New Zealand attack with power and precision, hitting 15 fours and one six in her innings.
Luus played a crucial supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 83 off 114 balls. Despite a brief wobble when Kapp and Bosch were dismissed, Luus ensured South Africa reached the target with ease.
Mlaba's impressive bowling performance was instrumental in restricting New Zealand's total. Her wickets included key players such as Devine and Halliday, stifling the White Ferns' momentum.
This victory is a significant boost for South Africa after their disappointing loss to England. The team's improved performance with both bat and ball demonstrates their potential in the tournament. Tazmin Brits' outstanding century and Nonkululeko Mlaba's match-winning spell were the highlights of a dominant display.
South Africa will face India on Thursday, while New Zealand will look to bounce back against Bangladesh on Friday.
