Following Sheffield Wednesday's entry into administration, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has voiced her concerns regarding the club's future and the implications for its supporters, staff, and players. The Championship club officially entered administration on Friday, October 24, 2025, after months of struggling with financial turmoil under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri.
Nandy stated, "For the fans, staff, and players of Sheffield Wednesday this is an extremely worrying situation". Drawing from her experience with Wigan Athletic, Nandy expressed empathy for everyone connected to the club, hoping for a swift resolution. She has been a vocal critic of Chansiri's management of Sheffield Wednesday.
The Culture Secretary highlighted the government's establishment of the Independent Football Regulator as a direct response to situations like this. Nandy emphasized that "Owners should be good custodians who act with their club's best interests in mind and clearly, in this instance, that has not been the case". She affirmed the government's commitment to equipping the Regulator with the necessary authority to safeguard the future of football clubs and ensure they remain integral parts of their communities. Nandy stated that "Situations like this are exactly why this Government set up the new Independent Football Regulator... We are working quickly to give the Regulator the powers it needs so it can better secure the future of football clubs and ensure they remain at the heart of their communities".
Sheffield Wednesday's administration has resulted in an automatic 12-point deduction, as per English Football League (EFL) regulations, leaving them at the bottom of the Championship table with -6 points. Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield, and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor have been appointed as joint administrators of both Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited and Sheffield 3 Limited, the company that owns Hillsborough Stadium.
The administrators have taken immediate control of the club to protect the interests of creditors and ensure the club's continued operation while seeking a new owner. Kris Wigfield noted that the club has been operating at "a significant loss for several years," previously covered by Chansiri. With increasing financial strain, Chansiri opted to place the club and stadium company into administration, facilitating the marketing of both as a whole.
The EFL has confirmed receiving formal notice of the administration and the 12-point deduction, which has been applied with immediate effect. The league stated that this development "presents Sheffield Wednesday with the opportunity to move matters towards a successful sale and secure [their] future under new ownership". The EFL will engage with the administrators to facilitate a swift resolution and end the uncertainty surrounding the club.
The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters' Trust described the day as "one of the most bittersweet days in our club's proud 158-year history". While acknowledging that administration was the "inevitable outcome of years of financial mismanagement," the Trust expressed joy at the prospect of Chansiri leaving the club.
Sheffield Wednesday was previously penalized with a six-point deduction during the 2020-21 season for violating profit and sustainability rules. The club was also under a transfer embargo for late payments.
