Colton Dach: Honing Power Forward Skills, A Focus on Continued Development and Impact on the Ice.

Colton Dach Continues Building On “Power Forward” Strengths

Chicago Blackhawks forward Colton Dach, drafted 62nd overall in 2021, is solidifying his role with the team, building on his strengths as a "power forward". The 22-year-old has impressed early this season, earning a regular spot in the lineup after a strong training camp.

Dach's journey to becoming an NHL regular hasn't been without challenges. After getting a taste of NHL action in January of last year, Dach set his sights on making the team out of training camp this season. He dedicated his summer to preparing, and his hard work paid off as he became a standout during camp.

So far this season, Dach has showcased his versatility, playing on different lines. He started on the third line with Jason Dickinson and Ilya Mikheyev and has also skated on the top line with Connor Bedard and André Burakovsky. Most recently, he's been playing alongside Dickinson and Ryan Donato. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill appreciates Dach’s adaptability, noting his ability to fit in various roles.

"I think throughout my career, I've always been able to do that - being versatile," Dach said. "I kind of played every position growing up on the forward side of it. So, I think that really helped, being able to kind of just fit in anywhere in the lineup. I have the ability to play with the top guys, and I think I have the ability to go down and be a hardworking guy on a checking line, as well".

Dach opened the scoring in the Blackhawks' recent game against the Ottawa Senators, notching his first goal of the season. He capitalized on a rebound off a shot by defenseman Louis Crevier. Despite having several chances in the previous nine games, this was his first of the year. Last season, Dach played 25 games, recording two goals and seven points. This season marks his first as an everyday player straight out of training camp.

Coach Blashill has been particularly complimentary of Dach's recent performances. "I thought the last game (versus the LA Kings on Oct. 26) his first period was really good. I thought he did a lot of things that power forwards do. Tonight he was at the net; he's been very physical,” said Blashill. The coach also noted that Dach is currently near the top of the league in hits, ranking sixth with 44.

Dach's size and physicality, combined with his skill, make him a unique asset for the Blackhawks. The team envisions him as a power forward, utilizing his attributes to contribute both offensively and defensively.

While Dach has the size to be a physical presence, he's not necessarily an old-school power forward who simply plows through opponents. Instead, he focuses on being physical in the corners and in front of the net, using his size to his advantage in puck battles and creating opportunities for his teammates.

Blackhawks' captain Nick Foligno, who earned his 600th NHL point with an assist on Dach's goal against Ottawa, praised the team's young core and their eagerness to rebuild the Blackhawks.

Dach's strengths include his offensive awareness, puck protection, and distribution skills, making him a threat in the offensive zone. He combines his size with good stickhandling ability, protecting the puck and creating plays in the cycle game. Dach is effective down low, controlling the puck and allowing his teammates to get open. He also possesses a good wrist shot and release, generating a lot of power on his shots.

While there's room for improvement, particularly with consistency, Dach's trajectory is promising. He has the potential to be a versatile and valuable player for the Blackhawks, contributing as a "power forward" who can impact the game in various ways.
