Klim Kostin, the former Edmonton Oilers forward, has signed with Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), effectively ending any possibility of an NHL return this season. The 26-year-old Russian player, who became an unrestricted free agent this summer, had expressed a strong desire to return to Edmonton, but ultimately opted to continue his career in the KHL.
Kostin's journey in the NHL began after being drafted 31st overall in the first round of the 2017 draft by the St. Louis Blues. He played with the Blues, Oilers, Red Wings, and Sharks, accumulating 25 goals and 53 points in 109 career games. His most productive season came during his time with the Oilers in 2022-23, where he recorded 11 goals and 21 points in 54 games, becoming a fan favorite in the process. He also contributed three goals and five points in 12 playoff games during Edmonton's playoff run.
Despite Kostin's fondness for Edmonton and his expressed desire to return, a deal never materialized. He had mentioned that he felt most comfortable in Edmonton, where he believed the fans truly understood and appreciated hockey. After his departure from Edmonton, Kostin signed a two-year agreement with the Detroit Red Wings. Most recently, he played for the San Jose Sharks, where he posted one goal and seven points in 35 games last season.
In the KHL, Kostin previously played for Avangard Omsk, winning the Gagarin Cup with them in the 2020-21 season. The recent signing marks a return to a familiar and successful environment for the forward.
While there were rumors of potential interest from the Los Angeles Kings, where former Edmonton general manager Ken Holland now works, and even the Oilers themselves, Kostin's return to the KHL signifies a shift in his career trajectory. He had previously stated his desire to prove himself as a full-fledged forward in the NHL, rather than just a tough guy. However, the opportunity to return to a championship-caliber team in the KHL proved to be the more appealing option.
