Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has surprised many by granting his players a day off ahead of their crucial Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund. The decision comes as a deviation from the norm, as teams typically hold training sessions the day before a major European fixture, with a portion of the session open to the media.
Guardiola addressed the media at his pre-match press conference, explaining the rationale behind his unconventional choice. "We will train tomorrow morning," he stated, indicating a shifted schedule. "I have done it a few times; sometimes I prefer it". He emphasized the demanding nature of their recent match against Bournemouth, suggesting the players would benefit more from resting at home. City secured a win against Bournemouth in their Premier League game on Sunday. In contrast, Dortmund hasn't played since Friday, giving them a potential advantage in freshness.
The manager acknowledged the congested schedule, stating, "It is what it is. No words are going to change the schedule". He also pointed out the differences in scheduling across different leagues, noting that in Germany and France, there's an effort to play games on Friday to allow teams more recovery time. "Here it is completely the opposite, but if I don't like it, I go to train in Germany and France," Guardiola added.
This decision highlights Guardiola's focus on player welfare and his willingness to adapt his methods based on specific circumstances. By prioritizing rest and recovery, he aims to ensure his squad is in optimal condition for the challenge posed by Dortmund. It remains to be seen whether this unconventional approach will pay dividends on Wednesday night as City looks to maintain their unbeaten start in the Champions League.
