Novak Djokovic has publicly refuted claims made by Angelo Binaghi, the Italian Tennis Federation President, regarding his participation in the upcoming 2025 ATP Finals in Turin. Binaghi stated on Italian radio channel Rai Gr Parlamento that Djokovic had confirmed his presence at the prestigious year-end event. However, the Serbian star has denied these claims, stating he is yet to make a final decision.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion, currently competing at the Hellenic Championship in Athens, addressed the matter after his second-round victory over Alejandro Tabilo. Djokovic stated in an on-court interview that he was unsure where Binaghi obtained his information. "I don't know where he got that information from. Definitely not from me or my team," Djokovic asserted. He emphasized that his decision regarding the ATP Finals would be made after the conclusion of his campaign in Athens.
Djokovic's participation in the ATP Finals has been a subject of speculation in recent weeks. He withdrew from the Paris Masters and has not competed since losing to Valentin Vacherot in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals. Concerns about a leg issue, which initially arose during his match against Taylor Fritz at the Six Kings Slam, also led to his retirement and further fueled uncertainty about his participation in Turin.
Despite these concerns, Djokovic returned to action at the Hellenic Championship in Athens, which is viewed as a positive sign. His brother, Djordje, is the tournament director for the ATP 250 event. After receiving a bye into the second round, Djokovic faced Alejandro Tabilo, defeating him in straight sets. Notably, Djokovic had lost his previous two encounters with Tabilo, including a defeat at this year's Monte-Carlo Masters.
Binaghi's initial statement had eased concerns that Djokovic might withdraw from the ATP Finals. The Italian Tennis Federation president said, "We have confirmation that Djokovic will be in Turin". The ATP Finals, scheduled for November 9-16, features the top eight players in the world. Djokovic has won the tournament a record seven times, last triumphing in 2023.
With Djokovic's participation still unconfirmed, one qualifying spot remains open for the ATP Finals. Lorenzo Musetti and Felix Auger-Aliassime are in contention for the final position.
Djokovic's strong denial of Binaghi's claim highlights the uncertainty surrounding his ATP Finals participation. The tennis world awaits his final decision, which he is expected to announce after the Hellenic Championship.
