Amsterdam, Netherlands – A tumultuous period at AFC Ajax has culminated in the dismissal of head coach John Heitinga, along with his assistant Marcel Keizer. The Dutch giants confirmed the news on Thursday, following a string of disappointing results both domestically and in the Champions League.
The decision comes after a disastrous start to their Champions League campaign, with a recent 3-0 defeat to Galatasaray leaving them at the bottom of their group with four consecutive losses. In the Eredivisie, Ajax sits fourth, already eight points adrift of leaders Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. The club has only managed to win five of their eleven league matches this season.
"It's a painful decision," stated technical director Alex Kroes. "But looking back at the past few months, we must conclude that things have turned out quite differently from what we had envisioned. We've seen too little progress and have unnecessarily dropped points". Kroes acknowledged the need for time when integrating new players but ultimately felt a change in leadership was necessary. "We know it can take time for a new coach to work with a squad that has undergone changes. We have given John that time, but we believe it's best for the club to appoint someone else to lead the team".
Heitinga's tenure, which began in May after Francesco Farioli's sudden departure, was initially set to run until June 30, 2027. However, the club has decided to terminate his contract with immediate effect.
Adding to the upheaval, assistant coach Marcel Keizer has also been relieved of his duties. Fred Grim will step in as caretaker manager, taking charge of the team for their upcoming away match against Utrecht. "We thank John and Marcel for their efforts and wish Fred the best of luck, starting with Sunday's away match in Utrecht," said Kroes.
Alex Kroes has also offered his resignation, taking accountability for the situation. However, the Supervisory Board and fellow board members have requested that he remain in his position to ensure continuity during this turbulent period. "My contract runs until the end of the season; should the club appoint a new technical director earlier, I will hand over my responsibilities at that time," Kroes stated.
The club has officially announced that they have suspended John Heitinga with immediate effect. The search for a new head coach is now underway as Ajax look to salvage their season and restore their status as a dominant force in Dutch and European football.
