Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly preparing to make a formal approach to Middlesbrough for their head coach, Rob Edwards. The move comes after Wolves sacked Vitor Pereira last Sunday following a string of poor results. Pereira's dismissal followed a winless run of eight defeats in their opening ten Premier League games.
Edwards, who took over at Middlesbrough in June after Michael Carrick's departure and signed a three-year deal, has emerged as the leading candidate for the Wolves job. The 42-year-old has guided Middlesbrough to third place in the Championship. Wolves had also discussed the vacant position with former boss Gary O'Neil, who later withdrew from consideration.
Edwards has a strong connection with Wolves, having made over 100 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2008. He also served as part of the club's coaching staff, working with the under-18s in 2014 before being promoted to a first-team coaching role in 2015. He later returned to manage the under-23s in 2019 before joining Forest Green Rovers in 2021.
When previously questioned about the Wolves job, Edwards maintained his focus was solely on Middlesbrough. He stated that he loves being Middlesbrough manager and hadn't given the speculation any thought.
Edwards' managerial career includes leading Forest Green Rovers to promotion as League Two champions in the 2021-22 season. He also had spells at Watford and Luton Town, guiding Luton to Premier League promotion via the playoffs. He left Luton Town by mutual agreement in January 2025.
His history with Wolves extends to managing their academy and having an interim spell with the first team. He was appointed as interim head coach in October 2016, managing two games before Paul Lambert took charge.
Wolves are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table and are looking for a manager to turn their season around. The club believes Edwards' previous experience with Wolves, combined with his recent success at Middlesbrough, makes him the right man for the job. It remains to be seen whether Middlesbrough will allow Wolves to speak to Edwards, but the Premier League club are determined to get their man.
