In a game where chances were limited, particularly for the hosts who only mustered three shots, Forest created the better opportunities. Manager Sean Dyche, who took over from Ange Postecoglou in October, made seven changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Manchester United in preparation for Sunday's Premier League game against Leeds United. Key players like Elliot Anderson, Matz Sels, and Murillo were left out of the starting lineup.

Sturm Graz thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Maurice Malone found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
