Rangers slumped to their fourth consecutive Europa League defeat, losing 2-0 to Roma at Ibrox. The loss leaves Rangers at the bottom of their group without a single point.
Roma took the lead in the 13th minute when Matias Soule headed in Bryan Cristante's flick-on from a corner. Lorenzo Pellegrini doubled the lead in the 36th minute, curling a shot into the net after being set up by Artem Dovbyk.
Rangers responded well after conceding the first goal and almost equalized through Youssef Chermiti, but his shot went wide. In the second half, Rangers continued to search for a way back into the game, with Mikey Moore having a shot go wide and Chermiti hitting the side-netting. Roma also had chances to extend their lead, with Zeki Çelik hitting the bar from close range. Rangers substitute Danilo had a shot blocked by Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar.
Rangers' manager Danny Röhl expressed his disappointment with the result, acknowledging that his team has more work to do. Röhl had inspired some optimism with domestic wins over Kilmarnock and Hibernian, but the defeat to Roma, coupled with a League Cup defeat to Celtic, highlighted the team's limitations.
The defeat means Rangers have now lost their last seven European matches, their worst-ever losing run on the continent. In contrast, Roma ended a two-game losing run in the Europa League with the win.
Individual player ratings reflected Rangers' struggles. Goalkeeper Jack Butland received a rating of 5/10, while defender John Souttar was given 4/10 for an ineffective display. Max Aarons was Rangers' best player on the night, earning a 6.5/10 rating.
The match statistics highlighted Roma's dominance, with the visitors recording an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.03 compared to Rangers' 0.86. Rangers' poor form in Europe contrasts sharply with their domestic performance under Röhl.
Roma's coach acknowledged the importance of the win, which boosted their chances of finishing inside the top eight of the league phase. Roma climbed up to 18th place in the Europa League standings.
Rangers will face Braga in their next Europa League match on November 27th.
