Calgary Flames' Owner Puts an End to Nazem Kadri Trade Speculation with a Firm Declaration.

Flames Owner Puts an End to Nazem Kadri Trade Speculation

Calgary Flames fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as team owner Murray Edwards has reportedly shut down any possibility of trading veteran center Nazem Kadri. This firm stance comes amidst swirling rumors and speculation about Kadri's future with the team, particularly given the Flames' underwhelming start to the 2025-26 season.

TSN's Darren Dreger reported the owner's position, emphasizing that Edwards "has no interest in trading Nazem Kadri" and "doesn't want to trade Nazem Kadri". Dreger further stated that Edwards "loves the core of this team" and that ownership has "no intention of trading away their veteran forward". This declaration provides clarity after weeks of speculation, especially following Kadri's recent milestone of playing his 1,000th NHL game.

Kadri himself seems to be on board with remaining in Calgary. Despite the team's struggles, he is reportedly committed to the Flames and has no desire to leave. This commitment is significant, considering Kadri holds a partial no-trade clause that allows him to list 13 teams to which he would not accept a trade.

The 35-year-old Kadri is currently in his second season of a seven-year, $49 million contract with an annual cap hit of $7 million. While some might view this as a substantial commitment for a player of his age, Edwards seems to see Kadri as a crucial part of the Flames' present and future. Kadri's contract runs through the end of the 2028-29 season.

Kadri's value to the Flames extends beyond his on-ice performance. He is viewed as a leader and a productive center, someone who can be a "face of change" as the team navigates a transitional period. So far this season, Kadri leads the Flames with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) through 15 games. He also marked his 1,000th game by scoring a goal in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

While some argue that the Flames should capitalize on Kadri's value and acquire assets for the future, Edwards' statement suggests a different approach. The owner seems to believe in the current core and is willing to be patient as the team works towards improvement.

Despite Edwards' firm stance, the situation remains fluid. As the season progresses and the trade deadline approaches, the Flames' performance could influence the team's direction. However, for now, Nazem Kadri appears to be staying put in Calgary, with the full support of the team's ownership.
