Sunil Chhetri Announces India Retirement; Future of Professional Football Career Uncertain Beyond Next Year

Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri, 41, is nearing the end of his illustrious career, confirming his plans to retire from professional football after the 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL) season. This decision follows his recent definitive retirement from international football after India's elimination from the Asian Cup qualifiers.

Chhetri had initially retired from international duties in June 2024, marking his farewell with a memorable match at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. However, he was persuaded to return to the national team by then-coach Manolo Marquez to aid India in the Asian Cup Qualifiers. Despite his efforts, India's failure to qualify for the tournament has solidified his decision to conclude his international career.

"It was easy telling (coach) Khalid (Jamil) sir about my decision," Chhetri stated, emphasizing his commitment to assist the team during the qualifiers. He added, "When I joined the national team, my only goal was to help as much as possible in the qualifiers. There was nothing else. If there were no qualifiers, I probably wouldn't have come back". He also mentioned that he had made it clear he would not accept the captaincy, allowing other players to lead.

Looking ahead, Chhetri is now focused on his club career with Bengaluru FC. He has set a conditional target for his retirement from professional football, stating he will retire after the 2025-26 season only if Bengaluru FC does not win the ISL title or secure a spot in a continental competition. "If we win the ISL, it will give me a chance to wear national (winning) club colors and play in international competitions again," Chhetri said. He has also set a personal goal of scoring 15 goals in the current season.

Throughout his career, Chhetri has achieved numerous milestones. He is the first footballer to receive the Khel Ratna Award, India's highest sporting honor. He has also been named AIFF Player of the Year a record seven times. Moreover, his international goal tally places him fourth on the all-time list, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Ali Daei.

Chhetri's journey began with Mohun Bagan in 2002, followed by a stint at JCT, where he scored 21 goals in 48 games. He also played for the Kansas City Wizards in Major League Soccer and Sporting CP in Portugal. His contributions have led India to victories in the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012), the SAFF Championship (2011, 2015, 2021, 2023), and the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008, which secured India's participation in the AFC Asian Cup after 27 years.

As Chhetri approaches the twilight of his career, his legacy as one of India's greatest footballers remains firmly intact. His leadership, goal-scoring prowess, and dedication to the sport have inspired a generation of players and fans alike.
