Veteran Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has expressed immense pride in the performance of Indian chess players at the Candidates Tournament 2024, held in Toronto. In an exclusive interview, Humpy lauded the unprecedented representation of India in the prestigious tournament, stating, "Having three of us in Candidates out of eight a remarkable performance". She highlighted the significance of this achievement, emphasizing the growing strength and depth of Indian chess on the global stage.
The Candidates Tournament saw three Indian Grandmasters, namely R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, and Vidit Gujrathi, compete for the coveted title of challenger for the World Championship. Additionally, Koneru Humpy and Vaishali Rameshbabu participated in the women's event, making it a total of five Indian representatives. Humpy acknowledged the fierce competition and the high stakes involved but remained optimistic about the chances of the Indian contingent.
"It is a very good development for Indian chess that now we have so many players playing in Candidates," said Grandmaster RB Ramesh, a former player-turned-coach. Humpy emphasized that the increased participation reflects the hard work and dedication of the players, as well as the positive impact of improved training facilities and greater exposure to international tournaments. She also noted the rise in the number of Grandmasters in India, which has fueled competition and raised the overall standard of play. At the end of 2010, India had 22 GMs which increased to 84 in the 14 years since.
Humpy, a seasoned campaigner herself, shared her insights on the challenges of competing at the highest level. She spoke about the importance of maintaining mental composure and handling pressure, especially in a long and demanding tournament like the Candidates. "I do sometimes go under pressure that's where I lose bad games," Humpy said. She also stressed the need for thorough preparation and a well-defined strategy to succeed against top-class opponents.
Despite the presence of formidable opponents such as Ian Nepomniachtchi, Hikaru Nakamura, and Fabiano Caruana, Humpy believes that the Indian players have the potential to make a significant impact. She praised the young Indian GMs for their talent, determination, and fighting spirit, acknowledging their potential to challenge the established order.
The veteran GM also reflected on her own journey in chess, recalling the challenges she faced in her early years. She spoke about the limited opportunities and lack of resources, which made it difficult for aspiring players to pursue their dreams. However, she expressed satisfaction at the progress made over the years, with increased support for chess and better infrastructure for training.
Humpy also acknowledged the difficulties of balancing her personal and professional life. "Balancing personal and professional lives is not at all easy... The recent Candidates was a 25-day trip to Canada for me... It was not easy emotionally to stay away from her," said Humpy.
The Candidates Tournament 2024 culminated with D Gukesh emerging as the winner, becoming the youngest-ever challenger for the World Championship. Tan Zhongyi won the Women's Candidates Tournament and will challenge Ju Wenjun for the title of World Champion. While other Indian players couldn't win the tournament, their performance was commendable, and Koneru Humpy's words serve as an encouragement for the entire Indian chess fraternity.
