Detroit Red Wings Call Up Nate Danielson from the AHL
The Detroit Red Wings have recalled forward Nate Danielson from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL). The announcement came Sunday morning, signaling a potential NHL debut for the highly touted prospect.
Danielson, 21, has had a strong start to the 2025-26 AHL season with the Griffins, recording five points (one goal, four assists) in four games. His plus-two rating and four penalty minutes also demonstrate his commitment to both offensive and defensive aspects of the game.
Drafted ninth overall by the Red Wings in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Danielson has been a prospect closely watched by fans and the organization. He made his professional debut with the Griffins during the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs as a 19-year-old. In 75 regular-season games with Grand Rapids, Danielson accumulated 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists) with a plus-six rating. He also added one goal in three Calder Cup Playoff games.
Prior to turning pro, Danielson showcased his talent in the Western Hockey League (WHL), splitting the 2023-24 season between the Brandon Wheat Kings and Portland Winterhawks. In 54 regular-season games, he posted 67 points (24 goals, 43 assists) and a plus-26 rating. He continued his impressive performance in the playoffs, tallying 24 points (7 goals, 17 assists) in 18 games with the Winterhawks, helping them reach the WHL Championship Series.
Danielson's recall comes after he recovered from an injury sustained in the preseason. After being reassigned to the AHL on October 24, it only took him four games to earn the call-up. According to Griffins head coach Dan Watson, Danielson quickly found his stride upon returning to game action.
There is speculation that Danielson may make his NHL debut in the matinee game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena. If he plays, the Red Wings will need to adjust their lineup.
Entering the season, Danielson was ranked as a top prospect in the Red Wings' system. While opinions vary on his ultimate NHL potential, his consistent effort and smart play have been praised. He is a right-handed center known for his skating ability, skill, and 200-foot game.
The Red Wings have several established centers already under contract, including Dylan Larkin, J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, and Michael Rasmussen. The team's depth at the center position is further enhanced by the presence of Marco Kasper, their top pick from 2022. The addition of Danielson provides further depth and options for the Red Wings.
