Jonathan India Returns to Royals: A Surprising Re-Signing After Non-Tender Speculation Circulated.

In a surprising turn of events, the Kansas City Royals have re-signed Jonathan India to a one-year, $8 million deal for the 2026 season. This move comes as a shock to many, as India was widely projected to be a non-tender candidate after a subpar first season with the team. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report the agreement.

India's performance in 2025 left much to be desired, with the former National League Rookie of the Year posting career-low numbers in several offensive categories. In 136 games, he slashed .233/.323/.346 with just nine home runs and 45 RBIs. His struggles at the plate translated to an 89 wRC+ and a FanGraphs WAR close to replacement level. Defensively, India also had a tough time, grading out as below average at second base, third base, and in limited appearances in the outfield.

Despite the disappointing season, the Royals are betting that 2025 was an outlier and that India can return to his previous form. His track record shows a player with a reliably patient approach and the ability to get on base, skills that the Royals value. Prior to 2025, India held a career .253/.352/.413 batting line.

Jonathan Joseph India, who will turn 29 next month, was initially acquired by the Royals in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds on November 22, 2024, along with Joey Wiemer, in exchange for Brady Singer. During the 2025 season, India showcased his versatility by playing second base, third base, and left field for the Royals. One highlight of his season was a three-run walk-off home run against Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians on July 26.

Before joining the Royals, India made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds on April 1, 2021. He quickly made a name for himself, earning the National League Rookie of the Year Award in his debut season after hitting .269/.376/.459 with 21 home runs and 34 doubles. His performance dipped from 2022-2024, but he still managed a .247/.343/.393 slash line during that period.

The decision to bring back India suggests that the Royals believe his on-base skills and versatility can help stabilize their roster as they head into the 2026 season. With uncertainty at second base and left field, India's ability to play multiple positions could prove valuable. FanGraphs projects him to be a league-average bat in 2026, providing a steady presence while the team evaluates its long-term options.

From a financial perspective, the one-year, $8 million deal also makes sense for the Royals. With approximately $133 million in projected payroll obligations for 2026, the team remains well below the luxury tax threshold. This gives them the flexibility to address other needs on the roster.

As Jonathan India enters his final year of arbitration eligibility, he will look to prove that he can still be a valuable asset for the Kansas City Royals. The Royals are hoping that a change of scenery and a return to his previous form will make the decision to bring him back a worthwhile investment.
