Angel Gomes is poised to make a significant move within Ligue 1, with an agreement in principle reached for the midfielder to join Marseille as a free agent. The 24-year-old England international's contract with Lille is set to expire this summer, paving the way for his transfer to the Stade Vélodrome. This move comes despite reported interest from Premier League clubs such as Tottenham and West Ham, with Gomes ultimately choosing to remain in France.

Gomes's journey to Marseille marks the next chapter in a career that began with high expectations at Manchester United. After joining United's academy at the age of six, he debuted for the first team in May 2017, becoming the youngest player to represent the club since Duncan Edwards in 1953. However, he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter and eventually left Old Trafford in 2020.

He then signed with Lille, and was immediately loaned to Boavista in Portugal for the 2020-2021 season to gain more playing time. Upon his return to Lille, Gomes became a consistent presence in the squad, showcasing his versatility in various midfield roles. During his time with Lille, Gomes made 134 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 19 assists. He also experienced Champions League football, including a memorable victory against Real Madrid.

The move to Marseille offers Gomes a fresh start and the opportunity to further develop his career. He is expected to sign a three-year contract with the club. Marseille's project, coupled with the chance to play under former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, appears to have been a key factor in his decision. Moreover, the opportunity to play Champions League football again with Marseille, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season, was undoubtedly appealing.

Another interesting aspect of this transfer is the potential reunion with Mason Greenwood, a fellow Manchester United academy graduate. Greenwood, who joined Marseille last summer, enjoyed a successful season, finishing as the league's joint-top scorer with 21 goals. The prospect of Gomes and Greenwood rekindling their partnership from their time at Old Trafford adds an intriguing dimension to Marseille's squad.

Gomes also earned four senior caps for England under interim manager Lee Carsley last year. He has also represented England at every youth level, winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017 and the UEFA U-21 European Championship in 2023.

According to reports, Gomes has already arrived in Marseille to undergo his medical. Once completed, the transfer will be official, and Gomes will begin preparations for the upcoming season with his new club. Marseille fans will be hoping that Gomes can bring his creativity and versatility to the midfield, helping the team compete for major honors both domestically and in Europe.
