The Philadelphia Flyers and Seattle Kraken have executed a trade, each team looking to bolster their AHL depth with a change of scenery for two 22-year-old forwards. The Flyers are sending Jon-Randall Avon to the Kraken, while receiving Tucker Robertson in return.
Jon-Randall Avon, who joined the Flyers as an undrafted free agent in 2021, has yet to make his NHL debut. Over 125 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Peterborough, Ontario native has recorded 16 goals and 19 assists. Avon is known for his speed and brings considerable professional experience to the Kraken organization. In his last two regular seasons with the Phantoms, he played 125 games and, while his 35 points may not be eye-catching, he can inject pace into the Firebirds' bottom six.
Tucker Robertson, also 22, was drafted by the Kraken in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Draft. The Toronto native has also not yet reached the NHL level. Through 77 career games with the Kraken's AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, he has tallied 10 goals and nine assists. The Flyers are acquiring a center who demonstrates scoring ability on the rush and around the net. Robertson led the OHL's Peterborough Petes in goal-scoring in 2021-22 with 41 goals and 40 assists in 68 games. He continued to improve, becoming the top offensive producer on the Petes team that won the OHL Championship in 2022-23 with 90 points.
Both Avon and Robertson were teammates on that championship-winning Peterborough Petes team. While Avon's point totals in Peterborough were less significant than Robertson's, he brings more professional experience to the table. Robertson had a brief stint in the ECHL where he was a point-per-game player, recording 14 points in 13 games. Last season, Robertson was a depth player for the Coachella Valley Firebirds, notching nine points in 38 games. The Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, could offer him more opportunities. Robertson is currently in the final year of his entry-level contract.
