VVS Laxman, the Head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), has stepped in to assist the Indian cricket team in England, filling an 'unofficial' role as Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach, attends to a family emergency back in India. Gambhir had to urgently return home due to his mother's health. Laxman's presence with the team has sparked considerable speculation, especially with the crucial Test series against England commencing on June 20th in Headingley.

Reports indicate that Laxman, already in the UK with the India U-19 team, will oversee the senior team's preparations. This isn't the first time Laxman has taken on such a responsibility. He has previously guided the Indian team in T20I series against South Africa and Ireland when either Rahul Dravid or Gambhir were unavailable.

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not officially announced Laxman as an interim head coach, sources suggest he is providing valuable insights to the players, particularly regarding adapting to the English playing conditions. It's understood that Laxman's visit to London was pre-planned, coinciding with the U-19 team's tour, and his presence at the senior team's camp isn't entirely unexpected.

The situation arose following Gambhir's emergency return to India after his mother suffered a heart attack. While it was initially hoped that Gambhir would return to England before the first Test, his return is contingent on his mother's recovery.

Laxman's role is considered temporary, with his expected return to India anticipated soon. His primary focus remains with the U-19 team, who are scheduled to play five List A games starting June 27th, followed by two first-class matches in Beckenham and Chelmsford.

This arrangement allows the Indian team to continue their preparations for the challenging Test series without a leadership vacuum. Laxman's experience and familiarity with the players make him a suitable figure to guide the team during this period. His presence could involve strategic discussions with the team, providing inputs during practice sessions, and generally ensuring that the team remains focused and prepared.

The Test series against England marks the beginning of a new era for the Indian team, especially with Shubman Gill captaining the side. The team has undergone changes, and faces a tough challenge against England on their home turf. The team hopes for Gambhir's swift return.
