Gautam Gambhir is set to rejoin the Indian cricket team in England ahead of the first Test match against England, scheduled to begin on June 20th in Headingley, Leeds. This news comes after Gambhir had to abruptly return to India due to a family emergency; his mother suffered a heart attack on Wednesday, June 11th, and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a Delhi hospital.

Following the concerning news, Gambhir immediately flew back to India on Thursday, June 12th, to be with his family during this challenging time. His sudden departure meant he missed India's intra-squad practice match in Beckenham. In his absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, along with bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, took charge of the team's preparations. The four-day practice game between India and India A was eventually called off midway through Day 3, on Sunday, June 15th.

Despite his mother remaining in the ICU, there are positive signs of recovery. Doctors are reportedly encouraged by her progress, offering hope for an early recovery. Sources close to Gambhir revealed that this positive development has enabled him to consider returning to England sooner than initially anticipated.

According to the latest reports, Gambhir is scheduled to fly back to England on Monday, June 16th, and is expected to join the team in Headingley on Tuesday, June 17th. A source close to Gambhir told Hindustan Times, "Gambhir will leave for the UK today. He will join the team in London, and then the entire squad will travel to Headingley on Tuesday." While his mother will remain in the ICU for continued monitoring, her improved condition has allowed Gambhir to fulfill his commitment to the Indian cricket team.

Gambhir's decision to return to England underscores his dedication to national duty. His presence is considered crucial, especially as the Indian Test team is entering a new phase following the retirements of key players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. With Shubman Gill appointed as the new Test captain, Gambhir's guidance and experience will be vital for the team.

The upcoming five-match Test series against England marks the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. The schedule includes matches at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London).

While Gambhir was away, assistant coaches managed the team during the intra-squad game. The Indian team opted for an intra-squad match instead of facing an English side to better prepare for the series. The team will travel from London to Leeds on Tuesday, June 17th, and will dedicate the following two days to net sessions.
