Chicago Blackhawks forward Lukas Reichel has been named to Team Germany's preliminary roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. This announcement marks a significant moment for the young winger, recognizing his growing presence both within the Blackhawks organization and on the international stage. The NHL is returning to the Olympics in 2026 for the first time since 2014, adding to the excitement.

Reichel joins a distinguished group of German hockey stars, including Edmonton Oilers' Leon Draisaitl, Ottawa Senators' Tim Stützle, Detroit Red Wings' Moritz Seider, Seattle Kraken's Philipp Grubauer, and Florida Panthers' Nico Sturm. These are the first six players named to the preliminary roster.

Born in Nuremberg, Germany, on May 17, 2002, Reichel was drafted by the Blackhawks in the first round (17th overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The 23-year-old has since been developing his game in North America, aiming to solidify his role in the Blackhawks' lineup. He is currently under a two-year, $2.4 million contract with the Blackhawks, signed in May 2024.

During the 2024-25 season, Reichel recorded a career-high 22 points (eight goals and 14 assists) in 70 games for the Blackhawks. While these numbers might not immediately jump off the page, his selection to the Olympic preliminary roster speaks volumes about his potential and the faith that the German national team has in him. He has a total of 54 points (20 goals, 34 assists) in 169 NHL games. Reichel has also represented Germany in three World Championships, amassing 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 19 games.

Notably absent from the initial six names announced was Buffalo Sabres forward JJ Peterka. Some found it odd that Peterka wasn't included.

With the inclusion of NHL players, the 2026 Winter Olympics promise to showcase an exceptionally high level of competition. For Germany, this Olympic team could be one of the most competitive rosters the country has assembled in recent memory. With elite talent on both ends of the ice and NHL-caliber depth, the Germans are expected to contend for a medal in Milan. Reichel will have the opportunity to compete against top NHL talent from other countries, including stars from Sweden, Switzerland, Czechia, and Finland.

The men's ice hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics will take place from February 11 to 22. The main venue will be the new Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, which has a capacity of 14,000. The group stage draw has already been determined, with Germany placed in Group C alongside the United States, Latvia, and Denmark.

Marty Walsh, the NHLPA Executive Director, stated that the naming of the initial players marks a powerful return to Olympic competition. He added that the players are looking forward to representing their home countries on the Olympic global stage in Milan.
