England's Test captain, Ben Stokes, has expressed his disappointment at Virat Kohli's absence from the upcoming Test series between England and India. Kohli's recent retirement from Test cricket, along with Rohit Sharma's, marks a significant transition for the Indian team, with Shubman Gill stepping up as captain for the five-match series starting June 20 in Leeds.

Stokes acknowledged that Kohli's absence would be a "shame" and a loss for the series and world cricket. He highlighted Kohli's "fighting spirit," "competitiveness," and "desire to win" as qualities India would miss. Stokes also noted the significance of Kohli's iconic number 18 and how strange it would be not to see it on the field.

"I did text him, saying it's going to be a shame not to play against him because I love playing against Virat," Stokes revealed. He emphasized the mutual respect and enjoyment they share in their on-field battles, attributing it to their similar mindsets.

Kohli ended his Test career as India's fourth-highest run-scorer, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 matches, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He also holds the record as India's most successful Test captain.

Stokes praised Kohli's remarkable career and acknowledged the praise he has received from players and fans in India and England. He recognized Kohli's success against England, further highlighting his status as a "class player."

With Kohli and Sharma's retirements, a new era begins for the Indian Test team. Shubman Gill will lead a relatively young squad, with Rishabh Pant as vice-captain. The series will also feature a new-look top order, with Yashasvi Jaiswal expected to open alongside Sai Sudharsan. Karun Nair is also anticipated to play a key role.

The England vs. India Test series marks the beginning of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle for both teams. The series will be held at iconic English venues: Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval.

Despite his retirement, Kohli remains connected to the Indian team. He recently hosted Gill, Pant, and Mohammed Siraj at his London residence, providing them with a relaxing break before the series.

The absence of Kohli will undoubtedly be felt, but the series presents an opportunity for new leaders and players to emerge for India. As Stokes noted, India will miss Kohli's fighting spirit, but the young team will be eager to prove their mettle against a strong England side.
