The Boston Fleet faced significant changes following the PWHL's expansion draft, losing key players on both their forward and defensive lines. While every team experienced losses, the impact on Boston is particularly noteworthy as they aim to retool for the upcoming season.

The expansion draft saw PWHL Seattle and Vancouver select from unprotected players, each team aiming to build a competitive roster from the existing talent pool. Boston, like other teams, could only protect a limited number of players, leaving some valuable assets exposed.

Among the forwards lost was Hannah Bilka, a promising center who was drafted by Boston in 2024. Bilka's departure creates a void in Boston's offensive lineup. Seattle selected Bilka, adding her to their roster. The Fleet also lost Hilary Knight to Seattle. Knight's departure represents a significant loss of leadership and scoring ability for Boston.

On the defensive end, the Fleet saw both Sydney Bard and Emily Brown depart. Bard, a 2024 draftee, was picked by Vancouver. Brown, a defender known for her physical play and puck-moving abilities, will be joining Seattle. In 29 games played, she had four points this past season.

The loss of these players necessitates a strategic response from the Boston Fleet's management. The team will need to explore options in free agency and the upcoming PWHL Draft to fill the gaps left by the expansion draft. The draft, scheduled for June 24th in Ottawa, presents an opportunity to acquire new talent and rebuild the roster. Boston holds the second overall pick, giving them a prime position to select a high-impact player.

Fleet has made moves to secure their existing talent, recently re-signing forwards Jill Saulnier and Theresa Schafzahl to one-year contract extensions. These re-signings demonstrate the team's commitment to maintaining a competitive core. Securing Aerin Frankel was also a key move for Boston, as she is considered by many to be the best goalie in the game.

The PWHL's expansion to Seattle and Vancouver has undoubtedly shaken up the league landscape. For the Boston Fleet, it presents both a challenge and an opportunity. While the loss of key players is a setback, it also allows the team to re-evaluate its strategy and build a new foundation for future success. With strategic drafting and free agent acquisitions, the Fleet can aim to remain a competitive force in the PWHL.
