Following Mary Earps's recent retirement from international football, all eyes are now on Hannah Hampton as she steps into the role of England's first-choice goalkeeper. The 24-year-old Chelsea shot-stopper is aware of the daunting task ahead, acknowledging the significant legacy Earps has left behind and the responsibility she now carries.

Earps, a two-time FIFA Best Women's Goalkeeper and Golden Glove winner, called time on her international career in May 2025, after earning 53 caps for the Lionesses. Her performances during England's victorious UEFA Women's EURO 2022 campaign and the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup cemented her place as a key player and fan favorite. Earps's decision to retire came as a surprise, especially with the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 on the horizon.

Hampton is ready to embrace the challenge. Despite the pressure, she expresses respect for Earps's decision. She has reached out to Earps to congratulate her on her successful international career. She recognizes Earps's impact on women's goalkeeping, noting how Earps has elevated the position and inspired a new generation.

Hampton's journey to becoming England's number one has been filled with challenges. Born in Birmingham, she spent part of her childhood in Spain, playing as a striker in Villarreal's academy before returning to England and switching to goalkeeping. She progressed through the youth ranks, representing England at various levels before making her senior debut in February 2022.

Hampton joined Chelsea in July 2023 and quickly established herself as the first-choice goalkeeper, contributing to their Women's Super League title win. Her performances have earned her recognition as one of the world's best goalkeepers. In the 2024-25 season, Hampton shared the WSL Golden Glove award with Manchester United’s Phallon Tullis-Joyce, keeping 13 clean sheets in 22 league appearances.

Sarina Wiegman, the England head coach, had already indicated that Hampton was her preferred choice for the upcoming EURO 2025, a decision seemingly confirmed when Hampton started over Earps in important matches.

Hampton is no stranger to pressure. She has experience stepping into big shoes, having previously taken over from Zecira Musovic at Chelsea. However, succeeding Earps on the international stage presents a different level of scrutiny. Hampton's focus is on giving her best and striving to live up to the standards set by her predecessor.

Hampton is aware that these Euros will be the first time she will be thrust into such a significant spotlight. She was part of the Lionesses squads for Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup but recognizes that her role is different this time. She has 15 caps and seven clean sheets since her debut in 2022.

With Euro 2025 approaching, Hampton is determined to make her mark and continue the legacy of excellence in England's goalkeeping ranks.
