Nikolaj Ehlers is heading to Raleigh. The Carolina Hurricanes have officially signed the Danish forward to a six-year, $51 million contract, with an average annual value of $8.5 million. The team announced the signing on Thursday, July 3rd, marking a significant addition to their roster.

Ehlers, 29, spent his entire NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets after being drafted ninth overall in 2014. Over his 10 seasons with the Jets, he established himself as a dynamic and skilled winger. In 674 career regular-season games, Ehlers has recorded 225 goals and 295 assists for a total of 520 points. He has also contributed 9 goals and 12 assists in 45 playoff games.

"Nikolaj was the top free agent available on July 1, and we are proud that he's chosen to make Carolina his home,” said Hurricanes General Manager Eric Tulsky. “He's a highly-skilled winger who can really skate and will fit very well with our forward group".

In the 2024-25 season, Ehlers scored 24 goals and 39 assists for 63 points in 69 games, helping the Jets win the Presidents' Trophy. He also added five goals and two assists in eight playoff games. Ehlers' offensive capabilities and playmaking skills will be a welcome addition to the Hurricanes' forward lines.

Ehlers is coming off a previous six-year contract with the Jets that paid him an average of $6 million per year. His new contract with the Hurricanes represents a significant raise, reflecting his value as a top free agent.

The Hurricanes have been active in securing their roster for the future. Prior to signing Ehlers, they signed Logan Stankoven to an eight-year, $48 million contract extension. They also acquired K'Andre Miller from the New York Rangers and signed him to an eight-year deal worth $7.5 million per year.

Ehlers has also represented Denmark in international competitions, including the IIHF World Championships and Winter Olympic qualifiers. He was also among the first six players named to Denmark's team for the 2026 Winter Olympics, along with Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen.
