Pedro Neto's participation in Chelsea's Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras is now uncertain following the tragic death of his fellow Portuguese international, Diogo Jota. The Liverpool forward, who also shared the field with Neto during their time at Wolverhampton Wanderers, passed away on Thursday in a car crash in Spain.

The news has deeply affected Neto, and he did not participate in training following the announcement. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Neto will be granted compassionate leave should he request it. The club is offering their full support to the player during this difficult time.

Maresca addressed the situation during a pre-match press conference, expressing his condolences and emphasizing that Neto's well-being is the priority. "It's a very sad day. I struggle to find words because it's very difficult, the feeling that you have is of helplessness in this kind of situation," Maresca said. "The only thing I can say is all my love to his family, the people in this moment. It's a big tragedy for them".

Regarding Neto's involvement in the upcoming match, Maresca stated, "In terms of Pedro it is very sad, probably more than sad". He further explained, "It's completely Pedro's decision. I had a chat with Pedro and we support him. Any decision he will take is the correct one. It doesn't matter if he'll be on the pitch or not. We'll see how he is feeling but, in any case, we're going to support him".

Chelsea is scheduled to face Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-final on Friday evening (2am Saturday UK time) at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field. The team has already secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup after defeating Portuguese giants Benfica 4-1. They overcame a near two-hour extreme weather delay that halted play to secure their spot in the next round, scoring three times in extra time.

Besides the uncertainty surrounding Neto, Chelsea also has other squad concerns. Midfielder Moises Caicedo is suspended for the game. Romeo Lavia is a fitness doubt due to a muscular injury. However, forward Joao Pedro could potentially make his debut after recently completing a £60 million transfer from Brighton.

Maresca commented on Joao Pedro's situation, saying, "Joao's situation is a bit strange or different because he was on holiday". Chelsea has also agreed to sign teenage forward Estevao Willian from Palmeiras, with the Brazilian officially joining Chelsea next summer.

Pedro Neto joined Chelsea on August 11, 2024, signing a seven-year contract. So far, he has made 35 appearances for Chelsea and scored 4 goals. Neto also played a role in Portugal winning the UEFA Nations League in June 2025.
