Real Madrid fans are eagerly awaiting the Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Borussia Dortmund, with the biggest question mark surrounding the potential return of Kylian Mbappe to the starting lineup. The French superstar recently recovered from acute gastroenteritis that sidelined him for the initial matches of the tournament.

Mbappe made his first appearance in the competition as a substitute in Real Madrid's 1-0 victory against Juventus in the last 16. He replaced Gonzalo García for the final 22 minutes of the match.

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has been providing updates on Mbappe's condition, stating that the player is "getting better" each day. Alonso has been in constant communication with Mbappe, monitoring his progress and recovery. While a final decision will be made closer to the match, Alonso has indicated that there is a "big possibility" Mbappe will feature against Borussia Dortmund. However, it is not certain whether he will be fit enough to start.

Alonso acknowledged Mbappe's improved condition over the last few days but emphasized that the ultimate decision would be made on the morning of the game. "He's getting better. He's been improving over the last three days. Tomorrow morning, we'll decide if he will be part of the starting eleven," Alonso stated.

Mbappe's return would be a significant boost for Real Madrid, but Alonso is also mindful of integrating him effectively into the team. He has also expressed the need for Mbappe to adapt his game to fit the team's overall strategy, particularly regarding defensive commitment. "We need to be committed on and off the ball," Alonso said.

Alonso also recognizes the challenge posed by Borussia Dortmund, noting their improvement under Niko Kovac. "Dortmund is a very good team. Ever since Niko Kovac took charge, they've been growing and improving. We're expecting a tough match — it's going to be tight," he said.

The potential partnership between Mbappe and Gonzalo Garcia has also been a topic of discussion. Alonso acknowledged that they could complement each other well and that he would consider playing them together if it benefits the team. Garcia has performed well in Mbappe's absence, scoring three goals.

The game is part of a tightly packed schedule, and Alonso is focused on quickly implementing his principles and building connections within the team. "With such an intense competition in a short time, to be able to build our principles, it's challenging," Alonso stated. "We are building connections in these early stages, but we are reaching a moment where we have to do it tomorrow".
