Hundreds, if not thousands, of Hong Kong football fans are reportedly making their way to South Korea to support their national team in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship 2025. Among them is a boisterous group known as "Chi Sin Lo," or "Crazy Guys" in Cantonese, who have mobilized around 900 members through a dedicated WhatsApp channel for the tournament.

The Hong Kong team is set to face formidable opponents in the Championship, which runs from July 7 to July 16. Their first match is against Japan on July 8, followed by a clash with hosts South Korea on July 11. They will then face China on July 15. All matches for both the men's and women's teams will be broadcast on TVB Channel 32 and RTHK YouTube.

While acknowledging the challenges ahead, veteran goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai, who recently celebrated his record-breaking 100th cap, remains optimistic. He expressed the team's determination to score goals, something they haven't achieved in this competition since 2003. Midfielder Philip Chan also cited their recent Asian Cup qualifying win against India as a source of inspiration.

Hong Kong's squad for the tournament features a mix of experienced players and fresh talent. While Japan and South Korea have largely selected players from their domestic leagues, Hong Kong has maintained its core senior team. Only coach Ashley Westwood remains from the previous 28-player roster.

The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) has been actively promoting the tournament and rallying support for the national team. The Park Lane Hong Kong has partnered with the HKFA to host an exhibition showcasing iconic moments in Hong Kong football history, including Yapp Hung-fai's milestone and Philip Chan's historic 1000th Asian Cup goal.

Hong Kong hosted the first AFC Asian Cup in 1956 and finished third. They also reached the semi-finals in 1964. After a long absence, they qualified for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. While they have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, this will be their fifth appearance in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship.

Mr. Eric Fok, Chairman of HKFA, expressed his excitement about Hong Kong hosting the Preliminary Round, emphasizing the city's advantages in hosting large-scale competitions. Hong Kong Stadium, Mong Kok Stadium, and the Kai Tak Sports Park are all potential venues.
