Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish striker for Sporting Lisbon, is facing disciplinary action after failing to report for pre-season training on Saturday. The 27-year-old was expected to join the squad by 5 p.m. local time, but he did not appear. As a result, the team departed for a training camp in Algarve without him.
Sporting Lisbon is considering fining Gyokeres unless he can provide a valid reason for his absence, such as a medical issue, an approved extended leave, or an urgent family matter. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has confirmed that disciplinary proceedings will occur.
This incident comes amid intense speculation about Gyokeres's future, with Arsenal reportedly keen on signing him. It's believed that Gyokeres and his representatives had a "gentleman's agreement" with President Varandas that would allow him to leave for around £65 million this summer. However, Varandas has publicly denied this agreement and is reportedly holding out for a total package of £69 million, with £60.5 million paid upfront.
The failure to report for training is seen as a way for Gyokeres to push for a move to Arsenal. For a long period, Manchester United and Arsenal were the main two clubs who battled it out for the striker. Earlier in July, it appeared that Gyokeres agreeing to personal terms with the Gunners meant his transfer to Arsenal was getting closer. However, a frustrating deadlock between the two clubs has put the deal in doubt, although negotiations are still ongoing.
Sporting Lisbon are in a strong financial position and are under no pressure to sell key players like Gyokeres. They have won three of the last five Primeira Liga titles and benefit from regular Champions League revenue. Varandas has taken a firm stance in the negotiations with Arsenal, rejecting an offer of €65 million plus €15 million in add-ons. He is demanding €70 million (£60.4 million) plus €10 million in add-ons.
Despite the ongoing transfer saga, Sporting CP are likely to take action against Gyokeres. He scored 39 goals and had seven assists in the Liga Portugal last season. In addition, he scored six times in the UEFA Champions League.
