Despite swirling rumors linking the Edmonton Oilers to goaltender Carter Hart, a well-connected NHL insider has shut down the speculation. Jason Gregor, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on July 12, 2025, stated that the Oilers have no interest in offering Hart a contract, regardless of the outcome of his ongoing legal situation.

Hart, a former Philadelphia Flyers goalie, is one of five players facing charges related to the 2018 World Junior team investigation. A publication ban is currently in effect, with a verdict expected on July 24.

The Oilers' potential interest in Hart was initially suggested by NHL insider Kevin Weekes. However, Gregor's statement definitively refutes these rumors, asserting that the possibility of signing Hart has never been discussed internally by the Oilers' front office. When challenged by a fan suggesting the Oilers considered Hart but faced internal resistance, Gregor responded, "Wrong. They have never had any discussion about it. All bogus reports". He also dismissed the possibility of the Oilers pursuing Ilya Sorokin.

The Oilers' goaltending situation has been a topic of discussion this offseason, with many speculating about potential upgrades. While Stuart Skinner has performed admirably, there is a belief that the team needs a more consistent option. Some suggested the Oilers might consider veteran Marc-Andre Fleury. Other potential trade targets that have been mentioned include John Gibson and Joey Daccord.

The organization's goaltending was not considered "elite" during the 2024-25 season. General Manager Stan Bowman has identified goaltending and forward depth as key areas for improvement. The team may also consider acquiring a lower-cost goaltender to serve as a backup to Skinner. Alex Lyon, who is potentially available, could be a low-cost addition.

Ultimately, Gregor's statement clarifies that Carter Hart is not among the goaltenders the Oilers are considering.
