The Edmonton Oilers are potentially one move away from solidifying their forward group and should aggressively pursue a trade for Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann. According to recent reports, the Kraken are open to trading McCann this offseason if they receive the right offer, as they believe he doesn't align with their long-term plans. This presents a significant opportunity for the Oilers, who are aiming for another deep playoff run after falling short in the Stanley Cup Final for two consecutive years.

McCann, 29, is coming off another strong season, recording 22 goals and 39 assists for 61 points in 82 games. He has two years remaining on his contract with a $5 million cap hit. His consistent scoring, combined with a reasonable cap hit, makes him an attractive option for teams seeking to bolster their top-six forward group.

The Oilers have already made a few moves to improve their forward depth this summer, adding Andrew Mangiapane via free agency and trading for Isaac Howard from the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, there's still room for one more addition, which would provide the Oilers with more depth and complete their top six. McCann could be the perfect fit.

Several teams are expected to express interest in McCann, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils. McCann also holds a 10-team no-trade list, giving him some control over his destination. It is speculated that he would prefer to go to a contender.

To make a trade for McCann work, the Oilers would need to create some cap space. With just over $225,000 in cap space, the Oilers would need to move out a player or two. Potential candidates include Mattias Janmark ($1.45 million) or Ty Emberson ($1.3 million). The Kraken could also retain some salary to facilitate the trade.

Acquiring McCann would give the Oilers flexibility in their top nine, allowing them to move around Mangiapane, Howard, and McCann on the left wing. McCann is a reliable scorer, which is something that the Oilers' recent additions haven't consistently demonstrated.

While acquiring McCann is not a necessity, opportunities to acquire players of his caliber don't come around often. If the Kraken are willing to be flexible, it's an opportunity the Oilers should explore. If Mangiapane doesn't return to his previous form or Howard struggles to adjust to the NHL, McCann would provide a solid alternative.

Overall, Jared McCann would be a valuable addition to the Edmonton Oilers. His scoring ability, two-way game, and reasonable contract make him an ideal target for a team looking to contend for the Stanley Cup. The Oilers should be aggressive in pursuing a trade for McCann to maximize their chances of success next season.
