India's captain, Shubman Gill, expressed his thoughts following a narrow 22-run defeat against England in the third Test at Lord's on Monday, July 14, 2025. Despite the loss, which handed England a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, Gill commended the team's resilience in challenging conditions.
"Extremely proud, (this is) as close as Test cricket gets," Gill stated after the match. He initially felt confident about India's chances on the final day, "Pretty confident this morning (with) plenty batting left this morning". However, he acknowledged that the team needed crucial partnerships, particularly in the top order, which they couldn't establish. "We needed a couple of partnerships in the top order, (but) we couldn't do that," Gill admitted. He also conceded that England outplayed them.
Gill pointed to the relatively modest target of 193 runs, suggesting it was within reach. "Target wasn't massive, one partnership and (we were) back in the game," he explained. He highlighted Ravindra Jadeja's experience and the plan to have him bat with the tail-enders. Gill said, "Jaddu (Jadeja is) very experienced, no messages, just wanted him and the tail to keep batting". Jadeja nearly pulled off a remarkable victory, remaining unbeaten on 61, but India fell short.
The match was filled with drama, particularly on Day 5. India started the day needing 135 runs with six wickets in hand, but England's bowlers struck early, seizing control. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes were instrumental in dismantling India's top and middle order. However, Jadeja's resilience, coupled with valuable contributions from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, kept India in the hunt.
Jadeja forged crucial partnerships with Bumrah and Siraj, inching India closer to the target. Ultimately, Shoaib Bashir dismissed Siraj, ending India's chase. Despite the defeat, Jadeja and Siraj received a standing ovation for their valiant effort.
Gill also felt that the Indian batters could have applied themselves better in the fourth innings. He noted that "Things turned quickly, last hour we could have applied ourselves better, and this morning they came up with plans". He, however, maintained that "the series score doesn't reflect how we've played".
Earlier in the match, Gill achieved a personal milestone, surpassing Rahul Dravid's record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test series in England. Gill now has 607 runs in the 2025 series, while Dravid scored 602 runs in 2002.
Looking ahead, Gill remained secretive about whether Jasprit Bumrah would play in the fourth Test in Manchester. "You'll get to know soon," he said.
