Erik Karlsson Trade: Why Oilers and Maple Leafs Aren't Logical Destinations

The possibility of Erik Karlsson joining either the Edmonton Oilers or the Toronto Maple Leafs has been a topic of discussion, but several factors suggest that such a move might not be the best fit for either team.

Why Toronto Might Hesitate

The Maple Leafs are reportedly monitoring a possible trade for Karlsson, with the veteran defenseman's name continuing to surface in offseason chatter. Toronto's potential interest stems from a desire to improve their offensive production from the blue line. The departure of Mitch Marner has further fueled this need, as the team seeks a quarterback for their power play.

However, the Maple Leafs face a significant cap crunch. With limited cap space, acquiring Karlsson would likely require the Penguins to retain a significant portion of his $11.5 million average annual value. To make room for Karlsson's cap hit, Toronto might need to offload contracts or include key players in any potential deal. Names like Brandon Carlo or Joseph Woll have been mentioned as possible trade chips. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period has shut down any link between Toronto and Erik Karlsson, noting that he hasn't heard absolutely anything linking the two parties to a surprising trade.

Even if the financial hurdles can be overcome, questions remain about Karlsson's defensive capabilities. While he brings offensive upside, his defensive game has been a concern. The Maple Leafs have prioritized defensive improvements in recent years, and adding Karlsson might compromise those gains.

Edmonton's Perspective

From Edmonton's perspective, acquiring Karlsson also presents challenges. While Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would undoubtedly benefit from another playmaker on the ice, the Oilers need to consider the overall impact on their roster.

One potential scenario involves the Oilers addressing their own contract issues as part of a larger trade. Darnell Nurse and his $9.2 million cap hit have limited Edmonton's cap flexibility, and his performance, particularly in the playoffs, has been a concern. However, trading Nurse for Karlsson would not necessarily solve Edmonton's problems. Like Toronto, the Oilers would need to find a way to make the cap numbers work, potentially requiring additional moves.

Karlsson's Situation

Erik Karlsson, currently with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has two years remaining on his contract. The Penguins are reportedly looking to move some of their veteran players, and Karlsson's name has been mentioned in trade speculation. Karlsson is willing to waive his no-move clause, but only for a select few teams. It's been rumored that Karlsson would prefer to join a team that provides him with a shot at winning the Stanley Cup.

TSN's Chris Johnston has reported that Karlsson is willing to be moved, but there are only a few teams the veteran is willing to move to. Johnston didn't identify those teams.

The Verdict

While Erik Karlsson's offensive skills are undeniable, his fit with the Oilers and Maple Leafs is questionable. Both teams face cap challenges, and there are concerns about Karlsson's defensive game. Unless the Penguins are willing to retain a significant portion of Karlsson's salary, a trade to either Edmonton or Toronto seems unlikely.
