AC Milan has officially announced the signing of Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić. The 39-year-old joins the Rossoneri as a free agent after his contract with Real Madrid expired. Modrić has signed a one-year contract with an option to extend for another season, potentially keeping him at the club until 2027, by which time he would be 41 years old.
Modrić's move to Milan marks a new chapter in his illustrious career. He spent 13 years at Real Madrid, becoming one of the club's most decorated players. During his time with Los Blancos, he won six Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, five Spanish Super Cups, five Club World Cups, and five UEFA Super Cups. In 2018, he was awarded the Ballon d'Or, cementing his place among the greatest players of all time.
Prior to his time in Madrid, Modrić played for Dinamo Zagreb and Tottenham Hotspur. He began his professional career with Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 16. After loan spells with Zrinjski Mostar and NK Inter Zaprešić, he returned to Dinamo, where he won three league titles, two Croatian Cups, and one Croatian Super Cup. In 2008, he moved to Tottenham, where he made 159 appearances and scored 17 goals.
Modrić is also a key player for the Croatian national team, captaining the side and earning 188 caps. He will wear the number 14 shirt for Milan, a number he previously wore at Tottenham. Modrić reportedly expressed his excitement about joining Milan and is eager to begin working with coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Milan fans are excited about the arrival of such a decorated and experienced player. Modrić's vision, passing ability, and work rate will be a valuable asset to the team as they look to improve on their eighth-place finish in Serie A last season. His arrival is seen as a statement of intent by the club, demonstrating their ambition to compete for major honors. He will start training with his new teammates in August.
