The Toronto Maple Leafs might have the ideal trade chip to initiate discussions with the Columbus Blue Jackets regarding Yegor Chinakhov, who has officially requested a trade. Chinakhov's agent publicly announced his client's desire to move to a new team, and Leafs general manager, Brad Treliving, should consider leveraging a particular player to facilitate the deal.

Yegor Chinakhov, a 24-year-old winger, has expressed his desire to leave Columbus due to some misunderstandings with the coach. Despite showing promise since being drafted in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft, Chinakhov has struggled with consistency and injuries. In 175 games with the Blue Jackets, he has showcased scoring ability but seeks a fresh start to unlock his full potential. Last season, despite being limited to 30 games due to injuries, he recorded 15 points (7 goals and 8 assists). With one year remaining on his contract with a $2.1 million cap hit, he will become a restricted free agent (RFA) next summer. Several teams needing depth and skill may express interest in acquiring him.

The Maple Leafs could offer Nicholas Robertson in exchange for Chinakhov. Robertson, like Chinakhov, is a young forward with scoring potential who hasn't quite solidified his role on the Leafs. Robertson has demonstrated growth and scoring prowess but is still on the bubble. A change of scenery could benefit both players, allowing them to thrive in new environments with different opportunities.

From Columbus's perspective, acquiring Robertson would add another promising young forward to their roster as they continue to rebuild. Robertson's offensive skills and potential could make him a valuable asset for the Blue Jackets. For the Maple Leafs, adding Chinakhov would provide another skilled winger with a scoring touch, potentially boosting their offensive depth. Chinakhov's speed and skill could make him a good fit in the Leafs' system.

General manager Don Waddell has acknowledged Chinakhov's trade request and has already begun discussions with other teams. However, Waddell has stated that he will only trade Chinakhov if the return is fair value. He won't simply give him away for minimal compensation. If a suitable offer doesn't materialize by training camp, Waddell expects Chinakhov to report to the team, but he will likely continue to explore trade options.

A trade involving Robertson for Chinakhov would address the needs of both clubs. It would give Chinakhov a fresh start in a new environment, while also providing Robertson with an opportunity to potentially excel in a different setting. It remains to be seen whether the Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets can agree to terms on a deal, but the potential for a mutually beneficial trade is there.
