The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reported a substantial revenue of ₹9,741.7 crore for the financial year 2023-24. A significant portion of this income, ₹5,761 crore, came from the Indian Premier League (IPL), which accounted for 59.10% of the total revenue. This cements the IPL's position as the primary financial driver for Indian cricket.

Key Revenue Streams

  • Indian Premier League (IPL): The IPL remains the BCCI's biggest source of income. In FY24, it contributed ₹5,761 crore, which is 59.10% of the total revenue. The IPL drives revenue through broadcasting rights, sponsorships, digital rights, merchandising, and licensing deals.
  • International Cricket Council (ICC): The BCCI received ₹1,042 crore from the ICC, constituting 10.70% of its total revenue. This reflects India's influence in global cricket.
  • Fixed Deposits and Investments: The BCCI's fixed deposits and investments generated an income of ₹987 crore, contributing 10.10% to the overall revenue.
  • Women's Premier League (WPL): In its debut season, the WPL generated ₹378 crore, accounting for 3.9% of the total revenue.
  • Non-IPL Media Rights: Broadcasting rights for international matches and tournaments (excluding the IPL) brought in ₹361 crore, which is 3.90% of the total revenue.
  • Ticket Sales, Hospitality, and Commercial Rights: These generated ₹361 crore, representing 3.7% of the total revenue, from India's home international fixtures.
  • Miscellaneous Sources: An additional ₹400 crore, or 4.1% of the revenue, came from various sources, including sponsorship royalties and licensing agreements.

Financial Growth and Projections

The BCCI's financial performance in FY24 exceeded expectations. The board's cash and bank balances increased from ₹16,493 crore in FY23 to ₹20,686 crore in FY24, a surge of 25.42%. The projected income for FY24-25 is ₹10,054 crore, with an estimated surplus of ₹7,706 crore after accounting for expenditures of ₹2,348 crore.

IPL's Media Rights and Brand Value

The IPL's media rights were sold for ₹48,390 crore for a five-year period in June 2022. The brand value of the IPL has grown by 13% to $12 billion in 2024, up from $2 billion in 2009.

Distribution to State Associations

The BCCI allocates a significant portion of its revenue to its 38 state associations. For FY24-25, ₹499 crore has been allocated for annual grants, and ₹500 crore is reserved for infrastructure subsidies.

The BCCI's revenue streams are diversified, with the IPL as the primary contributor. The board's financial model and strategic planning have made it a dominant force in global cricket.
