Toni Kroos, the legendary German footballer, has been awarded the prestigious 'State Order of Merit' in his hometown of Greifswald. In a unique and momentous tribute, the town was temporarily renamed "Krooswald" in his honor. Signs marking the changed name were placed at the entrances to the city.

The ceremony took place at the Volksstadion, the very stadium where Kroos began his football journey at the young age of seven with Greifswalder FC. The event was attended by his family, local residents, and officials. Minister-President Manuela Schwesig presented the award and praised Kroos’s charitable work through his foundation, which supports underprivileged children and families across Germany.

Kroos retired from professional football after the Euro 2024 championships, concluding an outstanding career with 34 major trophies. His accomplishments include the 2014 FIFA World Cup and six UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid. He also earned 114 caps for the German national team. Although he has retired from professional play, Kroos remains involved in the sport through media roles and the Icon League, an international five-a-side tournament.

The State Order of Merit recognizes Kroos's significant social contributions within the community. Schwesig highlighted Kroos's unwavering commitment to social causes, particularly his work with severely ill children and their families through the Toni Kroos Foundation, which he established in 2015. The foundation supports the advancement of Greifswald's university medicine. Uwe Reuter, the medical director of the local pediatric clinic, expressed his gratitude, emphasizing that Kroos is not only an extraordinary footballer but also a compassionate advocate for young patients and that his foundation has been a steadfast source of support for years.

The head of the city's marketing department, Mike Wittenbecher, stated that the "Krooswald" signs would remain at the city entrances throughout the weekend. The city of Greifswald, with a population of approximately 60,000, is known for its 13th-century cathedrals and churches, as well as its university founded in 1456.
